Ezra has three good buddies that form his core group, with Colby being his best friend.

He is outgoing with a good sense of humour and one of the popular guys in school. Eventually, Brian and his younger brother stay at Brian’s teacher’s house until things in his family become more stable.Įzra is the opposite of Brian. When the foster care does not work out, Brian takes his brother, and they take off. Brian is the one who finds his mom, and now he and his brother are in foster care while his mom recovers and his dad is on the run. On his thirteenth birthday, his dad suddenly takes off because he is in trouble with the law, and his mom cannot cope and tries to end her life by overdosing on pills. Brian’s dad is always giving him life lessons during their basketball sessions, telling him to “toughen up” and “speak up,” which is difficult for Brian, who is anxious and uncomfortable in social situations. Brian lives with his mom and dad and his younger brother Richie. T hanks A Lot, Universe is told in alternating chapters between Brian and Ezra, the two main characters connected by being the bench warmers of their school basketball team. Well written, full of positive emotional male middle-grade voices with perhaps the strongest supporting character cast I have read in a long time. T hanks A Lot, Universe is a book that grabbed me right from the beginning and had me rushing through life activities, so I could come back to read. One would never guess that this is Chad Lucas’s debut. Thanks to Edelweiss+ and the publisher for an eARC of this book.
